This work was undertaken as the major project or final work for an MA in Fine Art at Swansea Institute.  This culminated in successful completion in June 2003, when Sarah was awarded a distinction.

Previous work has mostly focused on the urban environment and landscape, with an emphasis on repetitive pattern. With this background knowledge, studies were extended into human pattern and crowd behaviour. The football ground was a particularly exciting environment and was the main focus for the Gesture project.

The decision was made to create a dance or physical theatre piece, that referred to the gestures, visual and auditory patterns and rhythms witnessed at football matches. Groups of students from Gorseinon College would perform on the terraces of the Vetch Field, Swansea and the performance recorded on film, which could then be shown on screen to crowds before a football match.

The ultimate intention; to introduce art and develop new audiences by exposing fans to a series of familiar images that directly relate to their particular environment.

This project was supported by the Arts Council of Wales, Swansea School of Art and Design and Gorseinon College (see also support).

The film was shown in the Vetch Field, Swansea, prior to the Hull City match on Saturday 3rd May 2003.
