News and Press Releases Vibrant Blossoming
PREVIEW A new show demonstrates the
vitality of printmaking in Pakistan The pattern of printmaking in Pakistan, writes Salima Hashmi in an interesting catalogue introduction, is characterized by ‘dormant stretches punctuated by vibrant blossomings’. It is currently in rude health, she reports, the efforts of Naazish Ataullah and Anwar Saeed at the National College of Arts, formerly the Mayo School, in Lahore, a major contributor. Fruitful exchanges with the Slade School of Art in London are another factor. Slade tutors Bartolomeu dos Santos RE and Peter Daglish RE have taught in Pakistan and many of the printmakers in this show have completed postgraduate studies at the Slade. The images are both varied and sophisticated. Naiza Khan’s suggestive, Her body in three parts, of hair and possibly skin, is a striking riposte to the idea of a woman’s place; Laila Rahman’s work demonstrates exemplary draughtsmanship and fluidity; and Anwar Saeed’s is a thought provoking meditation on taboos, religious and sexual. There is much else to admire – a wealth of ideas treated with admirable concision. Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers, an initiative by Swansea Print Workshop, Wales, is part of a year-long celebration of Muslim culture across the UK. Contemporary Pakistan Printmakers is at the Sultan Gallery Lancaster until 31 March Michael Sims, Deputy Editor |
