Festival of Muslim Cultures | Pakistan 2006-2007

 Pakistan 2006-2007

In January 2006 Swansea Print Workshop hosted Contemporary Pakistani Printmakers and toured this exhibition to venues around the UK with a supporting tri-lingual exhibition catalogue. The Workshop will be reciprocating in 2006/2007 with Contemporary Welsh Printmakers exhibition, which will tour major galleries in Pakistan.

Contemporary Welsh Printmakers is a unique opportunity to promote and celebrate Welsh printmaking to international audiences. Two venues have been confirmed in hosting the exhibition to date; these include Alhambra, Lahore and V.M. Gallery, Karachi.

The exhibition is open to all visual artists working in the medium of print who are of  Welsh nationality, or who live or work in Wales. Selection has already taken place and 45 pieces of work of very high quality have been chosen.

The workshop's representatives will be travelling to Pakistan with the exhibition in March 2007.  Alongside this exhibition a series of talks by one of the selected artists will be taking place in a variety of venues.

In addition, just as two Pakistani Artists in Residence visited Swansea, there are plans for two Welsh Artists in Residence to travel to Pakistan to work with community groups, school children and professional artists.  A research programme to support the continuation of this project - including a visit to Pakistan which has already taken place - has been completed and subject to securing further funding this is likely to take place during spring 2008.

Further to these activities, with the purpose of promoting valuable interaction and cultural diversity in those who are at a formative stage in their development, a 'twinning' has taken place between two schools: Coed Hirwaun Primary, Neath Port Talbot, South Wales and Mountain School, Gilgit, Northern Areas, Pakistan.  The children are currently corresponding and exchanging cultural information and experiences from their unique viewpoints.
