Malcolm

Victoria Malcolm grew up in Tunis, London
and Capetown; she trained in Fine Art painting at Hammersmith College in
the mid-70’s before moving to west Wales in the mid-80’s. Here she has developed and maintained her
practice, studying with the colourist Mary Lloyd Jones and more recently
with the calligrapher Mustafa Ja’far at the British Museum. She is a
founder member of Fforma group and of Aberystwyth Printmakers. Alongside exhibiting, she has a sustained
and continuing involvement with establishing both the regional and
artist led galleries in Carmarthen. Victoria is currently a Director and
Company Secretary of King Street Gallery artists’ cooperative.

My relationship with printmaking has led
naturally to a simple and abstract approach to the use of colour and
line, arising from my practice of lifedrawing and landscape painting.
I am working on a series of small
monoprints based on calligraphic letters of the Arabic alphabet, using
colour, sections and repeats to emphasise the beauty of the curved and
sensuous lines.
In taking the shapes out of the context of
words (and all that can be misconstrued from them by non-Arabic readers,
so full of apprehension about the Arab/Muslim world), I try to highlight
the underlying principle of the infinite line and the human qualities of
an abstract discipline so easily misunderstood.
